Allen hails penalty hero Hughes
Notts County boss Martin Allen saluted penalty hero Jeff Hughes after a dramatic 3-2 stoppage-time victory over Tranmere.
Hughes' 97th-minute spot-kick added to goals from defenders Julian Kelly and Krystian Pearce to give County the three points after Tranmere looked set to maintain their unbeaten start with strikes from John Welsh and Joss Labadie.
Allen said Hughes showed "immense courage" to grab the ball and take the vital spot-kick after Adam McGurk was adjudged to have handled on the line.
Hughes bore the brunt of the home crowd's frustrations during Saturday's defeat to Charlton and the team's penalty shoot-out exit to local rivals Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup.
Allen said: "He just got a round of applause from the boys in the changing rooms as to take that penalty - especially after what happened last week after we outplayed Nottingham Forest - took immense courage. He grabbed the ball straight away - we all saw that.
"That was the best performance we've put in since I came here as manager. The way we played - especially after Saturday when we were pants - I thought we were tremendous."

Re: Allen hails penalty hero Hughes
Clarke Carlisle headed the first goal to put North End on course for a convincing victory, with the visitors wrapping up the points seven minutes later when Barry Nicholson stole in between two defenders to nod home a cross from the right.
